Some crystals are easy to find, like ice, sugar and salt. Others are buried deep in the Earth’s solid bedrock. Some form when magma cools – this is how most igneous rocks are formed. The form of the crystal depends on pressure from its surrounding materials and how long it took for the magma to cool. Granite is a rock that is said to have been completely crystallized. Rocks like marble are created through a process called recrystallization. This means that they were formed from a solid state and from pressure of the Earth were turned into something different. For example, some marbles start as a soft, loose crystal called mica. Thousands of years of pressure will rearrange and compress the molecules of the mica into a more dense and hard crystal: marble!
